Kits

Curated, not warehouse

Bundles we would actually sow. Each line goes to a partner shop. Affiliate IDs live in one config file — empty until a program approves the site, then every link tags itself.

Spring

First garden

Six packets that actually finish for a beginner: greens, a cherry tomato, beans, basil, and a flower so the bed looks like you meant it.

Anytime indoors / after frost out

Balcony herbs

Renters out-buy homeowners on herb seed. Four pots, a railing, and a south-facing window.

Late summer

Fall greens

What to sow in August and September while everyone else is done. Count days to first frost.

Late winter

Seed starting bench

The gear that actually changes germination. Buy trays once. Skip the grocery-store peat pellets.

Fall

October garlic

Seed garlic plus the mulch habit. Plant cloves 4–6 weeks before first frost. Grocery bulbs are often treated — skip them.

  • Music hardneck

The Midwest bulb. Sizes up after a real winter.

    True Leaf Market
  • Softneck for mild winters

Braids and stores. Zone 7b and south.

    Seeds Now
  • Straw or leaf mulch

Three inches after planting. The crop sits until June.

    Gardener's Supply
Spring

Short-season Midwest

Zone 5–6 packets that finish. Early Girl, not Brandywine. A heat mat in March beats a fifth tomato.

Midsummer start

Fall brassicas

Start broccoli and kale in trays in July. Transplant into the hole the tomatoes leave. Cool nights do the finishing.

  • Waltham 29 broccoli

Side shoots after the main head. Start 10–12 weeks before first frost.

    True Leaf Market
  • Lacinato kale

Sweeter after frost. Transplant or direct-sow.

    Botanical Interests
  • 1020 tray

July starts still need a tray. Reuse the spring one.

A note when it is time to sow
